Leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Nansana Municipality have strongly dismissed allegations by the National Unity Platform (NUP) that the recently concluded elections were marred by rigging.
Speaking during a meeting convened to calm party members amid rising political tension, NRM officials maintained that the electoral process was transparent and credible, urging NUP supporters to accept defeat.
“We are warning our colleagues in NUP to stop misleading the public with claims that the election was rigged. The process was transparent and credible,” said Nansana NRM Chairperson Robert Maseruka.
The remarks come after several NUP candidates who lost the elections announced plans to challenge the results in court.
They also accused Nansana Resident District Commissioner Charles Lwanga of allegedly interfering in the electoral process.
Maseruka advised the aggrieved candidates to seek justice through legal channels instead of making public accusations.
“If they believe they were cheated, the courts are open. They should stop making noise in the media and follow the right procedures,” he said.
He added that NRM had faced losses in previous elections but chose to reorganize rather than make accusations.
“We have lost before, but we did not resort to accusations. We went back to the people, reorganized, and now you can see the results,” Maseruka said.
Musa Kalungi, a councillor representing Nansana Division, criticized what he described as double standards among some opposition members.
“It is surprising that when they win, they celebrate, but when they lose, they cry foul. Let them accept the outcome or go to court if they have evidence,” Kalungi said.
He also cautioned NUP supporters against attacking their opponents on social media.
“They should stop abusing us online and focus on legal processes if they have genuine complaints,” he added.
NRM leaders attributed their victory to improved performance and renewed trust from voters, noting significant gains in representation.
“In the previous term, we had very few leaders in Wakiso, and in Nansana Municipality, we only had two positions. But now we have secured 46 out of 60 councillor seats. That shows the people have confidence in us,” Maseruka stated.
The political atmosphere in Nansana remains tense as NUP candidates prepare to challenge the election results in court, setting the stage for a legal battle over the outcome.
